Dear
Friend,
What is gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis. Gout is
one of the most painful known types of arthritis. Gout is a disease that is
suffered by millions of people worldwide. Indeed, diagnosed for over 2,000
years, gout was considered the “disease of kings".
Gout is caused by elevated uric acid level in the blood stream. Uric acid occurs
naturally when your body breaks down certain types of foods, or from the
breakdown of the body's own cells during cell turnover.
People who have gout are unable to excrete uric acid due to a deficiency in a
digestive enzyme called uricase.
When high concentrations of uric acid build up in the body, over time, it
crystallize into uric acid crystals, crystals accumulate and are deposited in
the body’s connective tissue and joints.
These sharp uric acid crystals cause
inflammation, stiffness, severe burning pain, and excruciating swelling within
the joint. Usually causing your joint to swell up to more than double or triple
its normal size.
There are numerous factors that increase the risk of developing gout and
precipitating flares in established gout, such as:
Exuberant living: Consuming excessive
amounts of foods rich in purines and diet rich in proteins and fat.
Excess consumption of alcohol on a
regular basis, especially beer, because alcohol interferes with the removal of
uric acid from the body.
Renal Insufficiency: The inability of the kidneys to eliminate waste products.
Weight: Obesity increases the risk of developing gout because there is more
tissue available for breakdown, which leads to excess uric acid production.
Health Problems: Other health problems can lead to gout, include having too much
stress in your life, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, psoriasis, hemolytic
anemia.
Medications: Taking medications that increase the blood levels of urate, like
Diuretics, Aspirin, Nicotinic acid.
Generally a gout attack can last for
hours to weeks. If gout left untreated, it can result in gout attacks that are
more frequent and longer in duration. It can lead to other forms of damage to
the body, such as Kidney stones and irreversible joint damage.
How is gout treated by your doctor?
Doctors typically prescribe one of three types of traditional medicine include:
NSAIDs
NSAIDs can have significant side
effects including bleeding, stomach pain, and ulcers.
It can only manage a certain amount of pain, beyond that limit, additional
dosage will have no effect on the pain.
NSAIDs have no effect on the amount of uric acid in the body.
Corticosteroids
The most common side effects of
corticosteroids are a decreased ability of the body to battle infections and
heal open wounds.
Can also lead to the thinning of bones.
Colchicines
Serious side effects include abdominal
cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Traditional medicine carry many negative side effects, we urge you to consider
alternative remedies.
